Spanish Uruguay
The Spanish arrived on Uruguay in 1516 and there were many struggles with the Portuguese empires in the 16th and 17th centuries. The Spanish founded Montevideo. Uruguay was a Spanish colony and the official language is Spanish. Spanish influences can been seen throughout the country, including architecture and cuisine.
Tourism
Tourism is abundant in Uruguay, especially in Colonia due to its proximity to Buenos Aires. Montevideo is also busy with tourists due to its inexpensiveness. A 2 day stay in Montevideo can go for only $200 American dollars, with transportation and sightseeing. A trip to Colonia with tour is only $30 American dollars, for a whole day trip with ferry crossing, both ways.
Argentina to Uruguay
Argentina is around a 2-3 hour ferry ride across the Rio de la Plata or the Uruguay River. Argentina and Brazil are the most purchasers of Uruguay exports and also the most tourists that go to Uruguay. It is very easy to go to Argentina or Uruguay when in either country. Just bring your passport. A trip is around $30 american dollars both ways.

Shopping
Shopping is really good in Uruguay, partly because of exchange rates. The american dollar is about 35 times the Uruguayan, so alcohol, cigarettes, food, chocolate, and domestic products as well as dining out and entertainment are a great deal! Shopping centers, many of them new, can be found throughout as well as duty free shops on the ferries.
Football
Football, soccer, is the official sport of Uruguay. Many football fields can be found throughout Uruguay and Uruguay does very well in international competitions and has won many prestigious cups.
